2018 Kakadu Road Trip - the trip home

The next few days were pretty much more of the same - lots of driving. The kids movies that they had downloaded from Netflix had expired and the movie storage device stopped working. There was a lot of time to look out the Window.  The last night we camped at Gil Weir near Miles. It was freezing in the morning.

2018 Kakadu Road Trip - Katherine to somewhere near Tennant Creek

We now had 5 days straight driving to get home. Around 700k per day was needed.

We found another free camp along the Barkly Highway for the first night.

2018 Kakadu Road Trip - Katherine

Katherine was on our way home. We were all a little excited that we were heading home as we had been away for 3 weeks.

We set up camp and then headed into what seemed to the busiest Woolworths in all of Australia. After stocking up we headed back to camp where the kids just relaxed around the pool.

The next day we had a tour of Katherine Gorge and then a visit to the Katherine Outback Experience by Tom Curtain. This was a highlight for Katherine.

2018 Kakadu Road Trip - Gunlom Falls

We had heard reports that the road into Gunlom Falls needed grading - how bad could it be?

Well it took us over an hour to drive 40k over the worst road we have ever encountered. We were just crawling at some points through the corrugations and dips and bends. Crazy stuff.

The campground was nice and good amenities for a national park. We decided to tackle the climb up to the falls and swim pools. It was mountain goat territory but the infinity plunge pool at the top was worth it.

After the return drive out to the main road we needed to air up the tyres and make some repairs to the van. Colin noticed that the wheels had some movement and he needed to adjust the wheel bearings. This was definitely a harsh road.

2018 Kakadu Road Trip - Jim Jim Falls

From Cooinda we did a day trip out to Jim Jim falls. The road wasn't too bad with corrugations. It was a great walk climbing over rocks and boulders to get to an amazing waterfall and swimming hole.
